L&rsquo;\u00e9v\u00e9nement s&rsquo;est inscrit dans le sillage du Golden Globe qui, en 1968, initia la premi\u00e8re circum navigation de ce type par les trois caps (Bonne Esp\u00e9rance, Leeuwin et Horn). Sur les neuf pionniers \u00e0 s&rsquo;\u00e9lancer en 1968 un seul r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 revenir \u00e0 Falmouth, le grand port de la Cornouailles anglaise. Le 6 avril 1969 apr\u00e8s 313 jours de mer, le Britannique Robin Knox-Johnston arrivait enfin au but. Vingt ann\u00e9es plus tard, c&rsquo;est le navigateur Philippe Jeantot qui, apr\u00e8s sa double victoire dans le BOC Challenge (Le tour du monde en solitaire avec escales), lance l&rsquo;id\u00e9e d&rsquo;une nouvelle course autour du monde, en solitaire, mais&#8230; sans escale ! Le Vend\u00e9e Globe \u00e9tait n\u00e9. Le 26 novembre 1989, treize marins prennent le d\u00e9part de la premi\u00e8re \u00e9dition qui durera plus de trois mois. Ils ne seront que sept \u00e0 rentrer aux Sables d&rsquo;Olonne.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Les huit \u00e9ditions de ce que le grand public nomme aujourd&rsquo;hui l&rsquo;Everest des mers, ont permis \u00e0 167 concurrents de prendre le d\u00e9part de cette course hors du commun. Seuls 89 d&rsquo;entre eux ont r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 couper la ligne d&rsquo;arriv\u00e9e. Ce chiffre exprime \u00e0 lui seul l&rsquo;extr\u00eame difficult\u00e9 de cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement plan\u00e9taire o\u00f9 les solitaires sont confront\u00e9s au froid glacial, aux vagues d\u00e9mesur\u00e9es et aux ciels pesants qui balayent le grand sud ! Le Vend\u00e9e Globe est avant tout un voyage au bout de la mer et aux tr\u00e9fonds de soi-m\u00eame. Il a consacr\u00e9 de tr\u00e8s grands marins : Titouan Lamazou en 1990, Alain Gautier en 1993, Christophe Auguin, en 1997, Vincent Riouen 2005, Fran\u00e7ois Gabart en 2013 et Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac&rsquo;h en 2017. Le Finist\u00e9rien devient le nouveau d\u00e9tenteur du record de l&rsquo;\u00e9preuve en 74 jours. Un seul marin l&rsquo;a gagn\u00e9 deux fois : Michel Desjoyeaux, en 2001 et 2009.
